My 8th grade English teacher,
Jane Duncan, retired last summer. In January, with a bee in
her bonnet, she up and joined the Peace Corps and made the
trek from Montana to Africa! Now s he is working hard to establish
a functional school library at the J.R. Camm Senior Primary
School, which serves about 260 students in grades 5-7 in Aranos,
Namibia, a small town in the Kalahari Desert.
Recently released from apartheid
oppression, Namibia struggles to educate its children
in their newly elected official language, English. As you
can imagine, Jane's library collection, housed in a large
storage closet, is so small that the outdated that English
nonfiction and fiction books together occupy only
eight feet of shelf space!
| Cut to the chase, she's looking for books
to fill the shelves! And thanks to Amazon and the US Post
Office, donating
new books or those you've got laying around the house
is so easy. |

Say what?
Fifty years ago, the United Nations actually declared
literacy a basic human right along with food, healthcare,
and shelter! It stimulates personal growth, leads to higher
pay and job productivity, and is imperative to the
success of new countries like Namibia as they define their
values, develop an economy, and implement social policies.
Imagine registering to vote by thumbprint because you can't
write your own name or voting for president by photograph;
the picture of how literacy effects our lives becomes a little
more clear. This happens!
You understand the importance of education and the magnitude
of generosity, so join Tana's Habitat in giving
the gift of literacy to a faraway world of insatiable
and curious minds. It feels so good.
