Mark Your Territory
Repeat my words, "I am the human. I am the boss!" If the pets are going to shed, take (more) charge of where it happens. There will be some atmosperic drift of the stuff, but if you keep dogs and cats out of some rooms and off key pieces of furniture, you'll save yourself some clean-up.
Close doors to rooms you want to keep fur-free. Baby gates also work well for dogs. People whose children are getting older sell baby gates at yard sales and my local Good Will always seems to have a stack of them.
Train your dog not to sleep on your bed or rest on furniture you treasure. Most dogs respond well to the classic "NO" and/or a physical nudge off the piece of furniture. For stubborn canines - or sneaky Snoopies who climb on the couch when you're away from home, there is a special electrified mat you can lay on the couch or bed that delivers a mild shock to would-be snoozers.
Cats don't generally respond too well to training, but they don't like water. Use this in your favor! Keep a water gun near furniture you want your cat to relinquish, and squirt the furry feline when they get on it. Might seem cruel, but I've seen it work.
