Designer Rug or Design-a-Rug?
by Scott Acord

Sample | MyPod | Remnants | Ideas

Stuck with an ugly linoleum floor or even uglier beige carpeting? Have a really cool wood floor but want to warm up the room? Make your own ultra-hip, one of a kind rug and save a bundle.

Sample Rug
All carpet stores have samples. Some stores will even give you their old carpet samples while some will charge you a small fee. They're usually about 13"x18" and, when pieced together, can form a really great patchwork pattern of various colors and textures.

What You'll Need:
Approximately 35 carpet samples to form a rug approximately 9'x6'
    6-8 rolls of Carpet Seaming Tape 2 7/16" x 15'
    Scissors
    Some imagination

  1. Wash thoroughly inside and out.
  2. Go to carpet store and ask, beg if you have too, for their carpet samples You may need to go to more than one store although I found most stores to be pretty generous. You'll get random colors and textures but this just adds to the coolness factor of your soon to be one-of-a-kind designer rug.
  3. Clear the room and lay out the samples.
  4. When you have your rug laid out like you want it, flip over each sample and connect each adjoining section with carpet seaming tape.
  5. Once all sides are taped together have a friend help you carefully turn the completed rug back over and move your furniture back into place.
