Urb-Asian
by Tana March

Want to add some urban flare to your dorm room? Then take a cue from the hippest city on the planet and hit the streets of Tokyo.

Sleep Tight
  • Make a duvet cover by sewing two twin sheets together on three sides. Decorate the top sheet by fabric painting a giant Lucky Buddha or Pagoda on it. Trim the corners with big red tassels.
  • Cut out colored paper coy fish and tape them together to form a bed skirt.
  • Make felt pillows with your favorite anime or Superflat character on them.
In The Mood
  • Hang Japanese lanterns for mood lighting.
  • Get a big Oriental umbrella and hang twinkle lights from the spokes underneath. Ooh, romantic.
  • Get a bonsai plant or a lucky bamboo stalk. Maybe you'll get lucky!
Other Fun Stuff
  • Make your own message board! Get a piece of sheet metal from the hardware or roofing supply shop. Decorate the border with Japanese candies or toys. Glue the same (candy or toys) onto magnets and use them to post homework, schedule, pictures, etc. Hang your board on the wall with self adhesive Velcro, or lean it on your desktop.
  • Use indoor/ outdoor carpeting to create a lily pad rug for the cold tile floor.
  • Leave paper booties outside the door for visitors to wear inside your four walls.

Bright Idea: Already tired of those bare, cold walls? Cover 'em with graffiti! Use a little low tack double stick tape or self adhesive Velcro to put up some brown paper or butcher paper. Then invite your friends over to doodle on your walls! Document your entire year then roll it up and take your journal of artwork home to relish in the good times.
