And Now It's A Lamp
by Scott Acord
Intro | Ingredients | Instructions | Illustration

One of my favorite hobbies is to make new lighting. With cool fixtures hooked up to dimmers you can create a wealth of atmospheres and turn any boring apartment into a sexy love nest. Come on! Who doesn't look better in softer light?

Creating lighting is easy. There are very few parts - a cord, a socket, an on/off switch and a bulb, everything else is decorative. Don't be scared. If you have questions or concerns about the wiring, go to your local hardware store and someone in the electrical department will gladly give you a hands-on demonstration.
Once you start playing, you'll discover how easy it is to take almost any object and use it to create a new lighting fixture. I've used everything from a marble checkerboard for an overhead entryway light, to this decanter, to countless old bottles and even car parts.

So go to your local flea market, yard sales and hardware stores and get creative. You still have plenty of time to design and make everyone on your Christmas list a beautiful handmade lamp.
