Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder
by Melissa King
Intro | Boost | Breaking In

Boost Your Confidence
Some of you may be thinking “NO WAY,” but for those of you whose curiosity is piqued, listen to these perks.

Artists have a different view of the human body than society’s typical standard. They see the figure for all of its shades, shapes, lines, and colors of beauty. Modeling for an artist can be one of the most confidence-boosting activities that you can do for yourself. They will pay attention to every little detail and compliment how beautiful it is. It does not matter what age, size, or color you are.

The Experience
Initially you will not believe you are doing it. Just pretend you’ve done it a million times, and no one will know it’s your first. You will go into a bathroom or changing room and replace your day clothing for a robe. You will need to bring your own.

Next, you will enter the classroom where you will meet the teacher and class monitor. They are usually smiling and excited to meet you. Artists are always thrilled to work with models and paint or draw a new figure. After the greeting the three of you will work on a pose. They will usually ask if you prefer to sit or stand. If it is your first time, I recommend a sitting pose. They will design a scene with a backdrop behind you and a natural position that’s comfortable for you. They may ask you to try a couple different arrangements.

Classes are usually 3 or 4 hours long, and your poses will be 20 minutes a piece with a 5-minute break in between each. Generally you will need to be still for 20 minutes at a time, however for some drawing or sketch classes they may ask you to make up several different poses during each 20 minute time frame. In the middle you will get a long break that usually lasts 20 or 30 minutes. You can wear your robe during your breaks and read a book, or talk with the students.
