Beauty Is In The Eye Of The Beholder
by Melissa King
Intro | Boost | Breaking In

How Do I Start?
All you need to begin is a phone book. Look up numbers for local art schools as well as the art departments of colleges and universities. You want to ask for the model coordinator when you call. She or he is in charge of scheduling and payment. They will probably ask you to come in and fill out some basic employment forms, and that’s it. They will call you when there is an opening for a class. Once you model for a school, if the students and teacher like you, you will be asked back.

Schools typically pay anywhere from $10 to $15 an hour. Once you are comfortable, you can start modeling privately. Sometimes a student wants to get extra practice time at home, or make up his or her own pose and scene. This is generally safe, but use your best judgment regarding the person. Private modeling sessions pay anywhere from $15 to $25 per hour. Ask other models at the school what they are charging. You can advertise that you do privates sessions on the school bulletin board, or a student may approach you after class.

All in all, nude modeling for artists is a liberating experience. It is a completely legitimate, safe, non-sexually exploitive avenue to confront your fears and boost your self-confidence. You will leave the sessions feeling brave and beautiful…horizons expanded, and a few bucks richer.
