Wasteth Not
By Robyn Heller
Intro | Trash It | Shampoo | Brushing Bubbles | Bag It

Now about that shampoo and conditioner
Before you pitch it (hopefully, into a recycling bin), you may be able to get more out of it. The directions often encourage you to “rinse and repeat as desired.” What’s desirable about shampooing twice? Does it make you feel cleaner? Do you think your hair will smell better? The truth of the matter is: it’s all subjective. Cleaner than what? Shampooing once? If you shampooed seven times, would that be even cleaner? The answer is simply: no. Desires are psychological, and if you lather correctly once, your hair will be as clean and good-smelling as if you shampooed two or three times. In fact, over-shampooing can leave your hair coated, forcing you to then need “clarifying” shampoo. It can also rob your hair of its natural oils, requiring you to purchase a second product to re-moisturize it. You see the cycle. Shampoo companies have marketing people who want you to use more of their products so that they can sell you another bottle when you’ve used it up... so they attempt to get you to use it up faster. If you buy their product, don’t buy into their logic; it isn’t sound and it’s expensive.

After you’ve squeezed the life out of your bottle (which has lasted a long time, since you’ve cut your “rinsing and repeating” down to what’s actually necessary), don’t be too quick to get rid of it. Precious shampoo sticks to the insides of the bottle. Add ¼ cup (or a few teaspoons) of water and shake well… you’ll get a few more lathers out of your bottle. This also works with conditioner and liquid soap.
