Ales and Lagers each come light or dark or somewhere in between. Beer gets
darker when the barley is kilned for a longer period of time. This also
makes for rich, deep flavors. There are other classes of beer that don't
fit into these categories like Wheat (weisen, ie: Heffeweisen) and flavored
beers that are based on additional ingredients like pumpkin, berries
or even chocolate. Por ejemplo:
Amber
Malty and hoppy with rich golden color.
Bitter
This British style is a dry and aromatic beer, pale in color but strong
in alcohol content.
Fruit Beer
Usually made with berries, though other fruits like apricots and pears
are also used.
India Pale Ale
A.K.A. IPA, this ale was originally brewed in England for export to
India. The extra hops added to this flavorful beverage were intended
to act as a preservative, masking bad flavors that may have developed
during the long trip.
Pilsner
This classic lager was originally developed in Czechoslovakia. A pale,
golden-hued, light beer, many mass-produced American beers are modeled
after it.
Porter
Very bitter and very dark, this beer was originally developed in England
as a "healthy" drink for manual laborers such as porters.
A beer smoothie?
Stout
Very dark and heavy, Stout was invented by Guinness as a variation
on traditional porter.
Weizen
Malted wheat and barley are used for this German style beer. Hefeweizen
is a variation and is traditionally served with a slice of lemon.
