Halloween and candy, birthdays and cake -
we tend to mark special days with specific foodstuffs. However, there’s
no reason you have to choke down a piece of Tradition Pie; the celebration
is what matters, not the food on the table. If you are pro-beast, try
roast
goose or glazed
ham, both traditional holiday entrees. But if your
ideal Thanksgiving would be more ideal without turkey, we have some fresh,
fabulous suggestions.
Beastless Feast
If it’s gotta be “kind of” turkey, there’s always
Tofurky, a pre-cooked tofu and wheat protein blend with a turkey-like
texture and flavor offered by Turtle Island Foods Inc. and distributed
by Whole Foods. You can also find the wheat-gluten free Unturkey by Now
and Zen including a succulent soy skin. Both faux birds look just like
roast turkey breasts, are fully cooked and have excellent reputations
as authentically edible. There are, however, other ways go to. Instead
of pretending you’re eating turkey when you don’t want to
be eating turkey, why not drop the pretense and go for something completely
different?
