Too Good to be True?
Is bread’s perfection too good to be true? Americans seem to think so. Forty-five percent of us mistakenly believe that bread is fattening. And current diet trends urge us to forgo the carbs for high-protein diets rich with meats, eggs, and cheeses. We’re listening: Americans average only six servings of bread per day, while the Food Guide Pyramid recommends a range of six to eleven servings, depending on age, gender, and activity level.

But despite popular belief, bread isn’t all that bad. The complex carbohydrates found in bread are the body’s preferred source of fuel. And grains don’t fatten you up. In fact, carbohydrates contain less than half the calories found in fat. An average slice of bread has only 1 gram of fat and 75 calories.
