Too Good to be True?
Is bread’s perfection too good to be true? Americans seem to think
so. Forty-five percent of us mistakenly believe that bread is fattening.
And current diet trends urge us to forgo the carbs for high-protein diets
rich with meats, eggs, and cheeses. We’re listening: Americans average
only six servings of bread per day, while the Food
Guide Pyramid recommends
a range of six to eleven servings, depending on age, gender, and activity
level.
But despite popular belief, bread isn’t all that bad. The complex
carbohydrates found in bread are the body’s preferred source of
fuel. And grains don’t fatten you up. In fact, carbohydrates contain
less than half the calories found in fat. An average slice of bread has
only 1 gram of fat and 75 calories.
