Fruit finder
Now that you know, where do you go? At Trader
Joe’s, a gourmet mart,
the buyers strive to expand the line of organic fresh fancy fruits. Plus,
the staff wears Hawaiian shirts that may get any crowd into a fruit mood.
Currently, Trader Joe’s has a “Fancy Frozen Berry Medley” for
$2.49 a bag. It is a vibrant combo of blueberries, raspberries, and those
elusive marionberries.
Whole Foods is the world's largest retailer of natural and organic foods,
with over 140 stores throughout the country. It’s a great place
for finding exotic fruits. A popular trend, according to the Edgewater,
NJ produce manager, is unifruits, like the plumcot (3/4 plum, ¼ apricot).
The plumcot hails from Chile and is a “big-time seller.” Another
unifruit is the ortanique (orange/tangerine) from Florida.
Melissa’s, yet another world variety type store that focuses on
produce, scouts exotic fruits. Established in 1984, Melissa's/World Variety
Produce, Inc. is currently the largest distributor of specialty produce
in the United States. With over 800 items available at any given time,
Melissa's imports and distributes exotic fresh fruits and vegetables
from around the globe. I think their name is cool enough for me! Their
website features a great recipe for star fruit and kiwi tarts. Check
it out!
