Take Comfort: A Quick Guide to Comfort Food

Garlic toast
My Italian grandmother used to serve this every Christmas alongside the traditional dinner of ravioli. It's crispy and salty on top, not like the oozy garlic bread you get in restaurants.

What you'll need:

Sliced Italian, French, or sourdough bread
Softened butter
Garlic salt
Grated Parmesan cheese
Dried parsley

  1. Spread each slice of bread with softened butter.
  2. Sprinkle the bread with garlic salt, cheese, and parsley.
  3. Toast the bread, either in your broiler or your toaster oven, until the cheese starts to brown.

Warning: Be sure to keep an eye on your bread while it toasts! One moment, it can look woefully underdone, only to be scorched to ashes within a minute.

Bright idea: For a crispier version, try substituting pita bread (halved and cut into quarters) for the bread.
