Hey, Big Lender
The Fine Art of Borrowing
by Apryl Lundsten
Intro | Department Store | Car Lot | Bank | Lending Library

When You’re the Lending Library
Chances are you’re going be the lender once in a while. It’s important to establish boundaries – it’s alright to keep certain things off-limits to borrowers. Your Fiestaware, your wedding dress, your collection of Cure albums. Maybe you’re okay lending your CDs, but not your favorite Blahniks. Or maybe you feel comfortable lending your car, but not your money. That’s fine. Just be firm and upfront when friends ask for things. When you do loan, don’t be afraid to set terms and conditions, ask for stuff back, or insist broken items are fixed or paid for – and don’t feel guilty for asking. After all, you’re the one being generous. Even though confrontation might be uncomfortable, it’s better to be honest than resentful and angry.
