The Buy Line
If you've never worn (much less bought) a suit before, I highly suggest you do some serious comparison shopping and trying on before you get out your checkbook. To get a good idea of what you really like in a suit, go to a great men's department and try on the best. That way you'll know what to appreciate and look for when searching for the perfect bargain.

  • Department Stores: At most department stores, suits and shoes only go on sale twice a year, at the end of each season (thrice at Nordstrom). The first mark-down is usually 1/3 off, but the discount may increase if the merchandise doesn't move quickly. Light tailoring is included in the price.
  • Specialty Stores: The Men's Warehouse is a national discount store that offers a 20 - 30 % everyday discount on designer and self-label suits (manufactured by the store itself). They do charge for alterations at the time of purchase, but re-do's are free for as long as you own it. Look for local discount stores in the yellow pages.
  • Outlet Malls: Vendors who handle full suits are few and far between at this venue. Excercise your dialing finger before you start the car. You will find sport coats, slacks, dress shirts, and ties. But watch out. Many manufacturers produce product (particularly shirts and ties) specifically for the outlet market. Though they swear the items are still less expensive than at retail, a retail sale may offer bigger discounts. Outlets are an especially good place to find dress shoes though. There's not much difference between this years' style and last. A Wingtip is a wingtip is a wingtip. Right?
  • Consignment Shops: Unfortunately, I couldn't find a single one that caters to men in L.A. And if it ain't here... Sounds like a business opportunity to me.

Look for the book Buying Retail Is Stupid! by Tricia King and Deborah Newmark in the regional section of the bookstore. It has great tips on where to shop and save in your own hometown.
