Holiday Hip
by Tana March

What You'll Need | Instructions

  1. Measure your hips wherever you want your belt to lie. Add three inches.
  2. Cut denim, scarf and Stitchwitchery to this length by 5 inches width. If your fabric or scarf isn't long enough, just add a panel to the center.
  3. Pin Stitchwitchery to the backside of denim and use sewing machine to tack it down.
  4. Good sides facing, pin the scarf to the denim. Use your sewing machine to stitch along three sides with a 1/2" seem allowance.
  5. Trim the excess.
  6. Turn fabric right side out and iron flat on a high setting. Be sure to iron on the denim side or you'll burn your scarf!
  7. To set the Stitchwitchery, cover denim with a damp cloth. Place a hot iron along the entire length of the belt, holding for 10 seconds in each spot.
  8. Use your sewing machine's zigzag setting to serge the unfinished edge closed. Repeat until the entire edge is covered with thread.
  9. Zigzag the other finished edge for continuity.
  10. Mark the position for 4 grommets at each end of the belt and insert per instructions on grommet kit.
  11. Trim left over scarf to string the belt together.
