Accessories
Accessories make an outfit your own. They're also the best way to update your wardrobe without replacing everything in your closet. This fall there is more accessory action than ever and the hottest looks are boots, scarves, tights and brooches. Look for a few key pieces that will compliment what you've already got.

This year's slimmer heeled boot stops just below the knee.

  • Choose a basic black or brown boot for work and rich colors like dark red or purple as a more creative piece.

Play with layering color. Using current color combinations makes the difference between simple and sophisticated.

  • This season use combinations of black and brights like orange, red, pink and green.
  • Or go tonal with different shades of the same basic color like rust and orange; pink, red and burgundy; or bright green with forest.

Scarves are everywhere and can be worn everyday. Solid colors in longer, narrower shapes work best with your short skirts, layered tees and a fitted blazer or vest.

  • Experiment more with color and texture under a blazer – yes under.
  • Put your scarf on between your shirt or sweater and your blazer so the edge runs along the inside. This creates another layer of color or pattern and looks modern.
  • Fringe on a wool scarf looks nice when it hangs below the bottom of your jacket.

Leggings are a great way to update what you already have without spending a lot of money.

  • Go for black, gray, purple, red and some brights if you’re feeling mod.
  • Pink and green work well with lots of attitude and punk inspired outfits.
  • Fishnets over solid tights look really cool with short tweed or pleated skirts worn with a ‘40’s or ‘70’s inspired strappy heel.

A must have accessory for your new blazer is a brooch, but it needs to be done with panache. The best choices are thrift store finds or expensive pieces that you can’t live without. Anything from the mall risks looking forced and contrived.

  • Look for simple shapes to make it modern.
  • Enameled metal animals like frogs and butterflies or silk flowers are fresher than old gold pins with crystal blossoms.
