Last Minute Fright
By Dezhda Mountz
Intro | Read To Me | You Little Devil | Security | So Serious

Oh, You Devil

Never do craft stores come in handier than during Halloween. Get super crafty make your own devil horns. All you need is some fabric, a glue gun, and a headband. Paired with your favorite suit or slinky black dress, this is a costume that looks classy and mischievous at the same time, and devilishly simple to boot.

Pre-horn
Make sure you’re down with the glue gun routine. They're surprisingly cheap, mine cost me $2.50, and the glue sticks about $1. I recommend the high heat gun for maximum strength when bonding tough surfaces together. Like irons, glue guns take seconds to start heating up, so do not stand the gun on wood or any other non-heatproof material as soon as you plug them in. Then, use care when squeezing out the melted glue--just a little dab’ll do ya.

Don’t need to make an extra trip to the fabric store. Craft stores sell good-sized squares of felt for about 20 cents. Compared to what you’d pay for the uncomfortable plastic horns at costume stores—you can’t go wrong.

What you'll need:

Hot glue gun, with glue stick
    Plastic headband
Red fabric remnants: red satin, felt or thick cloth
    Pipe cleaner
Glitter, sequins, and other décor (Optional)

How to do it:

  1. Fold fabric in half, and cut two long triangles (starting at the edge AWAY from the fold). You’ll have two sets of two triangles each.
  2. Carefully hot glue the two sets of triangles together to create two horns, dabbing hot glue on the two long edges, leaving the bottom edges unglued.
  3. Bend pipe cleaners in half, mimicking the triangle shape of horns, and slip inside fabric.
  4. Hot glue base of horns to headband. Let cool.
  5. Splash buttons, sequins, and/or glitter over your horns for a little razzle-dazzle, if you wish.
  6. After dry, bend horns to your will!

Pipe cleaners will keep your horns unnaturally pert all evening and allow you to bend the horns for a clever, comical touch, making your ‘devil’ look anywhere from quizzical to tired, depending on your mood. As far as clothes, the favorite black dress looks great for gals, a snappy suit with an open collar is masculine and classy for guys.

Bright ideas: Pick alternative-color fabric (black, brown) for a dog or cat; buy extra fabric for tail. Paint detail inside the ear. White out works for black cat ears, if you’re desperate!

Complement the cat ears with a black camisole, flared pants, and sassy pumps; the dog with brown clothing items. Whiskers are optional as the ears are enough to get the point across. However, the gals out there just can’t leave the house without some sexy red lipstick. Me-OW!
