Sash It Up
By Joanna Varikos
Intro | Changes | Instructions

Sash made simple
It’s fairly easy to make a two-toned sash.

What you’ll need:

½ yard of each color of satin or velvet fabric (there will likely be extra material, so you can even make additional monotone sashes)
Sewing thread to match each color of fabric
    Scissors
    Ruler
  1. Lay out one fabric on top of the other, flat and square, and mark it in 4" sections from left to right. Use a ruler to mark the lines without moving the fabric around, keeping the lines as straight and even as possible. Don’t start from the ragged edged cut made at the fabric store; mark from a few inches away as your starting point
  2. Carefully cut the fabric along the lines you marked. You should have two pieces, about 41" long (longer than the one seen here, so adjust accordingly with the scissors) and 4" wide.
  3. Sew from one end to the other and across that end on one side using the matching thread. Then, do the other side with the matching thread. Leave a few extra inches so you can turn the sash right-side out. Make sure to sew both ends in the same direction. Otherwise, it will leave an uneven, lumpy seam.
  4. Turn your sash right-side out and flatten it out. Use the ruler (if it’s thin) or a pencil to push out the corners at each end.
  5. Make sure the seams are as smooth as possible, and then iron them flat. The iron setting should be on delicate and not too hot.
  6. Sew up the hole that was left for turning the sash right-side out.
