My great-grandmother, Bertha Ehrensperger,
was one crafty lady. During the Great Depression, when resources
were scarce, she found myriad ways to make beautiful objects
from everyday materials. As a result, she survived one of
the most economically grueling periods of history looking
like a million bucks. She tatted yards of lace from simple
string, for example, and made colorful beads out of the Sunday
comics. These beads can be made from any lightweight paper,
including wrapping paper, of which you're bound to have plenty
this time of year. So in the spirit of Bertha, save every
scrap! You may be wearing it later. |
