It Also Affected Me
There is a lack of understanding on the part of both communities. Christians
have also experienced a tremendous amount of persecution and resistance
at even a mere utterance or public expression of what they believe.
So even the interpretation of the anger that Jews are expressing, feels
to Christians like one more bash against their faith.
My Jewish friend I spoke to earlier had no idea that I had seen the
film when we were speaking. In fact, I said nothing to him about what
I believe; I only asked questions because I wanted to really understand
his point of view. I actually felt a stab when he told me that he wished
the story would be put to rest and that Christians would just move on.
For me, that would mean giving up everything that my faith means to me.
I had the opportunity to speak with Sue
Perlman, and she explained “The
Passion only tells a portion of the story and to have a real balanced
perspective, you need to know about his (Jesus) life, why he had to die.
It doesn’t go through why he had to die, the movie starts with
the suffering.”
As many are saying, we can really use this time, Christians and Jews,
to have some honest talks. It’s important for Christians to assure
their Jewish friends that being Jewish is not a liability. The Passion
has ignited some tough issues, but I hope the result will be good. I
have already learned so much, and I hope that we will all be able to
lay down our defenses, and just listen.
