Losing the Tube:
National TV Turnoff Week
By Susan Derby

Intro | Population | Turn It Off

Tuning It Out, Turning It Off
In light of the many facets of culture affected by this entertaining and ubiquitous medium, one person's one-week television fast may not seem so significant. Oh, but it is. If a week off of work or school allows you to refocus, reenergize, and reassess priorities, think about the possibilities for self-renewal that might ensue from a week away from TV. After re-plugging it, you may well go back to your regular shows as well as channel-surfing, but some of the programming may not seem so necessary anymore. Perhaps you will have started a yoga class, picked up a classic novel, or taken the time out to call up old pals.

The TV-Turnoff Network's Six Enduring Screen-Free Activities
Don't know what to do with all your spare time? Try these suggestions.

  • Study a musical instrument
  • Plant a garden
  • Write a journal or diary
  • Learn to dance
  • Read
  • Take a hike

The possibilities are endless. It starts with you. Have power over your remote control, instead of letting it take hold of you. C'mon. Turn it off.
