The Gift
She has a gift for transforming junk into art. She creates portraits of
people and animals out of recycled materials. Gathering her raw materials
from yard sales, thrift stores, junk yards and the trash is part of the
fun for her. She also has a network of friends and collectors around
the country that keep her supplied with plenty of raw materials for her
art. “My art is 95% trash, including stuff people send me, stuff
I find in the streets and in the desert, stuff I find at yard sales,
thrift stores and other recycled items. I enjoy seeing something that
was heading for the trash suddenly become celebrated in a piece of art,” see
states.
She’s not concerned about running out of junk. She feels there’s
enough out there for all of us to be making art: “I think there's
enough interesting garbage and junk out there to keep us all busy making
art and stuff for a long time.”
Even though recycling is an essential part of her philosophy, she doesn’t
beat others over the head with it. She would rather lead by example. "My
vision of a perfect world is one in which we start reusing and recycling
more than we are depleting our natural resources. Where the air and skies
get clearer and we all slow down and enjoy each day. There's really enough
for all of our needs to be met abundantly without destroying our beloved
planet. After all, I think for most of us, our biggest need is to be
at peace and enjoy life. I have enjoyed making my art from trash these
past 8 years and am grateful to be making a nice living at it.”
Her art is very accessible subject matter, price and venue. It appeals
to those with expensive art collections as well first time art buyers.
In addition to showing her work in art galleries she also sells her pieces
in non-conventional venues like swap meets and her website.
