Do Something Nice
Not everyone can afford to stuff a giant turkey each year. That's why during the holidays, shelters and soup kitchens across the nation are bustling with volunteers providing feasts for those who would otherwise go without. Why not don an apron and join them?

The prospect of spending a major holiday in a completely unfamiliar place might seem daunting. Will you be feeding that man who you step over en route to the subway each morning? Will everyone there think you're just some spoiled yuppie trying to assuage your liberal guilt? Wouldn't you rather be watching the Macy's parade?

Trust me—you wouldn't! Keep in mind that poor people are—well, just people. If you're nervous, take time to talk to the volunteer coordinator where you'll be working. Explain that you're new to the shelter scene. He or she should be able to put you at ease, find a task that suits you, and be available for questions during your shift.
