Plan Your Own Feast
So you can't make it to the annual family gathering this year. But there's
no reason why you should be deprived of a fabulous meal. Dine solo,
sponsor an "orphans' feast" for also-lonely acquaintances,
or share a romantic meal with a lover. Whatever the case, tap your
inner kitchen prowess and dive headlong into the fine art of menu-planning.
Perhaps you've always hated the traditional pumpkin pie, and wished
for chocolate instead. Or maybe you want to stick to your vegetarian
diet this year instead of succumbing to pressure from your mother, who
only lectures you on vitamin intake when you skip the annual turkey.
Now's your chance. This year, make yourself a nice veggie loaf. Whatever
your preferences, take the opportunity to bring your personal touch to
the occasion.
Remember that preparing a meal is time-consuming. If you'd rather not
spend your day cooking—but still want to create a nice meal—then
plan accordingly. Focus on making one or two simple dishes, and supplement
these with grub from a fine deli like Whole
Foods. If you do choose a
meat-centered menu, select an appropriately sized turkey—or consider
choosing a smaller bird altogether; for example, quail makes for tender
meat and an exotic flavor.
Last, but not least, don't forget to decorate the table! I mean, you
could just gather cross-legged around the coffee table—more power
to you! But it only takes a little creativity to fancify your dining
experience. Light a few candles and break out your best dinnerware. Maybe
even splurge on a few dining accoutrements at a local antique shop

Bright Idea: Ever had water from a chilled silver cup?
Trust me, it's a whole different experience. Try it! |
