Write Away, Ma’am

By Robyn Heller

Intro | Sound Off | Get Away From Me | You're Special

Get away from me, kid, you bother me
Freedom of the blogger is good in theory and all, but let's face it: there are some serious weirdos on the Internet. Here are a few suggested Don'ts to keep you out of some potentially sticky situations:

  • Don't put your full name, address, phone number, or name of college/school/work in your blog.
  • To avoid spam, leave your e-mail address out as well. Spam bots search the Internet for e-mail addresses and add them to spam lists, which are sold to other spammers. Many journal sites allow your readers to leave you feedback directly on a message board or in private notes that will show up when you go to edit your account, alleviating the spam problem.
  • Don't be too quick to post photographs of yourself. You may write some things that you'd rather not be held accountable for, and nothing proves you said it more than sticking your mug up next to your words. Also, the weirdo theory applies to photos too. Stalkers abound, even in cyberspace.
  • Don't forget that the Internet is not private. You may think it's unlikely that someone can find you in the vast webpage jungle, but you'd be surprised at how well people can navigate the web. If you don't want someone to know something, consider how likely it is that your blog will be read by that person before posting it now and regretting it later.
