Love Thy Mother

By Robyn Heller

Intro | The Beginning | Hippies | Party On

Hippies were no slouches!
Not surprisingly, Earth Day was very effective in the 70s, an era well known for its social struggles such as civil and women’s rights. In the early years of Earth Day, many important laws were passed including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Endangered Species Act, and the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act. The Environmental Protection Agency was also created at this time. Earth Day was no joke… this was serious progress!

Although such national turmoil has changed through the years, there is still a ton of environmental mayhem to be dealt with. If you can’t get out on Earth Day (or even if you can), familiarize yourself with pressing environmental issues such as deforestation, pollution, and extinction, and write your local and national representatives to tell them what you think. On this day, there will be no shortage of people voicing their opinions with you, so don’t be shy… someone has already stepped onto the dance floor and started breakdancing. Join in.
